Orthodontics alone can correct many bite issues if only the teeth are involved, but orthognathic surgery may be required if the jaws also need repositioning.
Corrective jaw surgery or orthognathic surgery treats and corrects irregularity and misalignment of the facial bones, specifically the jaws, and the benefits include an improved ability to chew, speak and breathe, and an enhanced appearance in many cases is also the result. Orthognathic surgery corrects these problems, and in conjunction with orthodontic treatment, will improve the overall appearance of the facial profile.
Just as an orthodontist repositions teeth, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon uses orthognathic surgery to reposition one or both jaws. Moving the jaws also moves the teeth, so orthognathic surgery is usually performed in conjumction with orthodontics so that the teeth are in proper position after surgery.
Those who can potentially benefit are those with an improper bite, and those whose jaws are positioned incorrectly due to uneven or non-symetrical jaw growth, genetics, or injury to the jaw.
If there are any concerns with an unusual bite that you or your child may have or have developed with growth, Dr. Prose can address it at a consultation. There he can evaluate, diagnose and then refer you to an oral surgeon if needed.
