What Is Early Treatment and When Should My Child See an Orthodontist?

According to the American Association of Orthodontists, children should have their first orthodontic visit by age 7. By this age, your child’s mouth has a mix of baby and permanent teeth, which allows our doctors to spot subtle issues that may not be visible to you or your child’s general dentist. Some issues early treatment can detect include problems with jaw growth, their bite, or teeth crowding.

Early treatment, or Phase 1 orthodontics, focuses on correcting these issues while your child’s bones and dental structures are still growing. The goal is to intercept problems early, so future orthodontic treatment, like braces or Invisalign®, can be simpler, shorter, and more effective.

Reasons to Invest in Early Orthodontic Treatment

Early orthodontic treatment offers more than just a head start on a straight smile. It’s a proactive approach that comes with significant advantages for your child’s development, confidence, and future orthodontic needs.

More Stable Results Over Time

By working with the jaw during a child’s growth phase, we can gently influence how their bite develops. This creates space, improves alignment, and sets the foundation for a healthy, confident smile that stands the test of time.

Lower Likelihood for Future Extractions

Supporting proper jaw and dental development early on creates a better environment for permanent teeth to emerge on their own. This can help simplify future treatment and reduce the chances of needing more complex procedures like extractions later.

Reduced Risk of Dental Injuries

Protruding front teeth are more vulnerable to accidents, especially during playtime or sports. Early orthodontic care allows us to shift them into better alignment, offering added protection as your child grows.

Easier to Speak and Swallow

An uneven bite can occasionally interfere with natural speech patterns or how kids swallow. Early orthodontic intervention can help correct these issues, leading to clearer communication and easier, more comfortable daily habits.

Less Complicated Future Care

Addressing orthodontic concerns during a child’s developmental years helps lay the groundwork for future care, often making any later treatments quicker, simpler, and more effective.

Builds Self-Esteem

A healthy, aligned smile early in life can make a big difference in how children see themselves, helping them feel more self-assured in the classroom, on the field, and with friends.

Phase 1 Orthodontics at Prose: What’s Involved With Treatment?

Our Phase 1 treatments are always tailored to your child’s unique needs. Not every child requires early intervention, but when it’s recommended, our care may include:

These tools help guide the growth of the jaw and make space for incoming permanent teeth, reducing crowding or misalignment later on.

If thumb-sucking, tongue thrusting, or prolonged pacifier use is affecting tooth or jaw development, we may recommend simple solutions to correct those habits and protect your child’s bite.

We use modern, non-invasive appliances to gently influence how the upper and lower jaws develop, improving bite alignment and facial balance.

Sometimes, the best first step is careful observation. If treatment isn’t needed right away, we’ll track their growth over time and step in only if intervention becomes necessary.

Early Treatment: What to Expect at Your Child’s First Visit

Your complimentary consultation at Prose Orthodontics includes:

  • A gentle, kid-friendly exam
  • Digital scans using iTero technology (no goopy impressions!)
  • A conversation with Dr. Prose or Dr. Grzetic about your child’s growth
  • Personalized recommendations (with or without treatment)

Our goal is to make the experience easy, educational, and fun, so that kids can feel great about taking care of their smiles.

What Comes After Phase 1 Treatment?

Once early treatment is complete, most children will move into a retention phase, followed by a pause until all their permanent teeth come in. From there, we may recommend Phase 2 treatment, such as full braces or Invisalign®, to fine-tune your child’s alignment and bite. Since we’ve already laid the groundwork, Phase 2 is typically shorter, simpler, more predictable, and often delivers better results.

Many children don’t need early orthodontic treatment, and that’s okay! If this is the case, we may recommend monitoring your child’s smile as they grow. We never recommend treatment where it’s unnecessary.
