Teeth naturally tend to shift back toward their original positions. We prescribe retainers as a reliable method to prevent this movement. Following your retention plan is the most effective way to protect the investment you have made in your smile.
Maintaining Your Smile
We provide a personalized retention plan to ensure your teeth remain in their new, aligned positions. Once you complete your treatment with Damon™ braces or Invisalign® clear aligners, your teeth require a period of stability. We use custom-fit retainers or other retention options to secure your results while the supporting bone and tissue adapt.
Types of Retainers
We offer 2 primary options at Prose Orthodontics. Our doctors will determine the most suitable choice for your specific clinical needs.
Clear Essix® Retainers
These removable appliances consist of durable, transparent plastic. They are nearly invisible and fit securely over your teeth. Because you remove them to eat, you can maintain your normal oral hygiene routine with ease.
Bonded Retainers
We also provide permanent or bonded retainers. This method involves a thin wire bonded to the back of your teeth. This retainer remains in place, which removes the risk of misplacing your retainer or forgetting to wear it.
How Do I Care for My Clear Retainers?
Thoughtful care of your Essix® retainers ensures clinical excellence and oral health. We recommend these steps:
- Clean them daily. Brush your retainer every day using a soft-bristled brush and mild soap. Avoid toothpaste, as it can scratch the surface.
- Avoid heat. Do not use hot water or dishwashers, as heat can warp the material.
- Use the case. Store your retainers in their protective case whenever they are not in your mouth.
- Keep away from pets. Store your appliances in a secure location where pets cannot reach them.
How Do I Clean a Bonded Retainer?
Maintaining a bonded retainer is a fairly straightforward process:
- Focus on hygiene. Brush and floss daily, paying close attention to the area around the wire to prevent plaque buildup.
- Use specialized tools. Many patients find that a water flosser is a reliable tool for cleaning around the wire.
- Take care when eating certain foods. We suggest avoiding very hard or sticky foods that could damage the bond.
